What is CarbonCure and Why Does CTI Ready Mix Use It?

When most people think about concrete, sustainability probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But ready mix concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in the world, which means even small improvements in the way it’s produced can make a difference. That’s one of the reasons CTI Ready Mix utilizes CarbonCure technology in our concrete production process.

CarbonCure injects captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) directly into fresh concrete during mixing. The result is a more sustainable concrete mix that helps reduce embodied carbon.

How Does CarbonCure Work?

CarbonCure is integrated directly into the batching process at the plant. As concrete is being mixed, a precise amount of captured CO₂ is injected into the mix. The CO₂ immediately reacts with the cement and forms calcium carbonate, a naturally occurring mineral commonly found in limestone.

For our customers, the process is completely seamless. The concrete arrives, places, finishes, and performs exactly as expected.

Why Does it Matter?

Cement is one of the most important ingredients in concrete, but it's also the biggest contributor to concrete's embodied carbon emissions. CarbonCure helps improve cement efficiency by allowing producers to reduce cement content while maintaining required strength and performance.

As project owners, developers, architects, and municipalities continue looking for ways to reduce embodied carbon in construction, technologies like CarbonCure provide a practical solution that doesn’t require changes in the field.

The Benefits of CarbonCure Concrete

Reduced Carbon Footprint: CarbonCure helps lower the embodied carbon of ready mix concrete by permanently mineralizing captured CO₂ during production. This can help support sustainability goals on commercial, municipal, and institutional projects.

Improved Cement Efficiency: By improving cement efficiency, CarbonCure allows producers to reduce cement content by an average of 3–5% (according to CarbonCure), helping lower emissions associated with concrete production.

Supports Low-Carbon Construction: As sustainable construction continues to gain momentum, CarbonCure can help support low-carbon concrete specifications, green building initiatives, and projects pursuing LEED certification requirements.

Same Quality Concrete: CarbonCure works behind the scenes during production. Contractors, finishers, and project owners receive the same dependable concrete performance they expect from CTI Ready Mix.
